The essay starts with one of the opening sentences, and that sentence appears exactly as it does on the prompt. (10 Points) – This is a binary. They either get it or they don’t. Essays that don’t follow the word count are disqualified. Score all other options as 0 in the case they miss starting with a prompt.
The student is the main character in their own essay. The essay must be about them. (20 points) • 0 points if they just describe the world around them • 10 points if they describe events that happened to them • 15 points if they describe their feelings about those events • 20 points if they reflect on what that says about them
The essay has a beginning, a middle, and an end. By the end, something has changed for the student. (20 points)
Topic sentences effectively introduce each paragraph, and the information is organized in a way that is easy for readers to understand. (20 points)
Our judges will score each essay on how likely they are to remember it, specifically, after reading all of the other entries. (30 points)
