Portsmouth Abbey School

Portsmouth, Rhode Island
High School , 9-12 , Co-ed
Founded in 1926

Portsmouth Abbey School is a coeducational, Catholic Benedictine boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. Founded in 1926 by the English Benedictine community, the School is located on a 525-acre campus on the banks of Rhode Island's beautiful Narragansett Bay. The aim of Portsmouth Abbey School is to help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. Grounded in the Catholic faith and 1500-year old Benedictine intellectual tradition, the School fosters: reverence for God and people. Respect for learning and order. Responsibility for the shared experience of community life. Their independent academic and co-curricular programming encourages students to live by the school mission: reverence, respect and responsibility. Portsmouth Abbey School works to strike a balance between forward thinking innovation and stability rooted in tradition as we prepare our students to engage in successful college careers and in the world beyond formal education. The curriculum encourages the students to ask big questions like: Who am I? Where am I going? What is my place in this world? How do I know? The Abbey prepares each student for post-secondary academic work by providing a broad and liberal education in the Benedictine tradition. The Abbey also offers students multiple opportunities for academic enrichment outside of the classroom. Academic trips are offered over the summer as well as during School breaks. In addition, students have opportunities to apply for fellowships and internships. Some examples are students going to Rome for a humanities program or England and Ireland exploring those countries’ music and theater scenes, and much more.
